First Home Game

We won our home opener today against North Dakota. It was in the 60's this afternoon making it a perfect day for baseball. EJ and I had a great time with Kelly and Sammi. EJ tried holding her hand several times. It was sweet but she was not interested. Good for her!! Check out the adorable bow her grandma made. She was the hit of the ballpark.

After the game EJ got to attend the pitcher's meeting with Eric and run around on the field with Coach Anderson's daughter, Andie. All in all, a very fun day at the ballpark.

Nebraska Baseball won their first game in Louisana and the pitching staff established a school record with 22 strikeouts! They have three more games this weekend so here's hoping for more success.

Happy Hearts!

Happy Valentine's Day!!

We will be having a "white" Valentine's Day as it has snowed 5 inches here today.

Sending hugs and kisses your way from EJ!!

18 Months!!!

EJ is 18 months old today! He is becoming such a big boy. He is full of life and adventure. It’s a rare day when you find EJ in a bad mood, but he is going through the developmental stage of separation anxiety where he cries when I leave him. Fortunately, my “number” has yet to show up on the screen at church when he’s in the nursery so he is able to calm down quickly and find a ball to throw around. He’s pretty obsessed with balls. They are his favorite toy. Just the other day we were at the park with slides, swings, and sand and he kept asking for a ball. He also has an obsession with our ping pong table. He would play ping pong for hours if we let him. I had buy several ping pong balls because my back was sore picking up the three we had. Now you can find ping pong balls in every room in our house. They are the perfect size for his little hands.

He has lots of friends at Lori’s house, where he goes on Tuesday and Thursday mornings when I am teaching. It’s fun to pick him up because all the little kids yell “EJ’s Mom” when I walk in. It’s rather sweet. He also learns funny games from the other kids that we get to see when he gets home.

EJ laughs a lot and loves to play. As you can see, he is quite found of telephones. In the picture he has Eric’s cell phone but he also has his own play phone and any remote control works as a phone too. He walks around with the “phone” on his shoulder and talks. At the end of his sentence he cackles. I wish I knew who he was "talking" to because it’s awfully cute!

We also have a lot of “Happy Feet” in our house. EJ loves it when I tap dance for him and he tries to do it too. As you can imagine, he loved the movie “Happy Feet” and now we have "Happy Feet" dance parties in the kitchen where we all shuffle our feet. My dad and I used to dance in our kitchen when I was younger so it’s fun to have a similar tradition.

In addition to Happy Feet, he likes Elmo on Sesame Street and Diego. His all-time favorite is Finding Nemo, who he calls “Mo-mo.” "Mo-mo's" picture is on our baby wipes container and it’s the only thing that keeps him still so I can change a diaper. If Mo-mo isn’t around it’s a serious wrestling match to get his diaper changed. Speaking of diapers, EJ is showing about half the signs needed for potty training so we are holding off on that for now.

We had the little man sleeping until 7 am but this week he is back to old self getting up at 6 am. So much for sleeping in! In the morning he loves to watch us get ready and he can brush his teeth now. He also likes to shave with Eric. We have a razor without a cartridge on it and he carefully touches his face with it when Eric is shaving. It’s really a precious sight.

His vocabulary is growing with his favorite words being banana and uh-huh right now. He wouldn’t touch bananas for the first year of his life and now he loves them. Go figure. He is a good eater and when he isn’t in the mood to finish his dinner all we have to do is “tap” forks with him between bites and he keeps going. It’s somewhat of a game, but it works. Last night I had a heart-shaped Valentines cake for my Bible study and when he saw it this morning he had to have some. After breakfast, he kept pointing at the heart tin and I finally gave in and we ate Valentine cake on the kitchen floor together at 6:15 am. I guess I am a pushover before the sun comes up!

Baseball season starts next week so our lives are about to get very busy. Here is EJ with Eric's baseball cap. I doubt I will see much of the home games this year as I will be chasing EJ around the stadium. Fortunately, there is a playground and a grassy berm around the entire outfield so we should have lots to keep us busy.

We hope to have lots of guests come visit for Husker Baseball this season. We'd love to have you!!

That’s the latest from Lincoln. Take care!

First Haircut!

Today, EJ visited the barbershop to get his first haircut. He refused to sit in the chair or wear the cape but once we got started he did a great job. It helped that Lisa, our hairstylist, let him hold as many combs as he could in both hands. Whatever works to get the job done!

Welcome 2009!

Happy New Year!

My break from technology was great and I highly recommend it!! I didn’t do much baking and the baking I did do sent Eric to the doctor’s office. I made some Rice Krispy Treats and one went down Eric’s throat the wrong way causing a scratch that then got infected. The poor guy was in A LOT of pain. Thankfully, the doctor gave him pain meds and an antibiotic to get rid of the infection. It’s just more confirmation that I should stay away from baking! I had more success reading. I was able to read several books with my favorites being the new Baldacci novel and Shepherding a Child’s Heart by Ted Tripp. Both were great reads. I also read countless children’s books with EJ. He loves to look at books and “read” them.

We brought in the New Year in San Diego. The best part was the warm weather! It was a nice break from winter in the Midwest. We were able to visit the San Diego Zoo (for free thanks to a nice man who gave us free tickets outside the entrance! Yay!), Sea World and a Cal State Fullerton Basketball game to see Uncle Andy in action. We also got some great time with Andy, who changed his first EJ diaper! We had more In-n-Out Burgers than we should have but they were so good. We have converted EJ to and In-n-Out fan and he ate an entire cheeseburger by himself.

Sea World opened up a whole new world to EJ and he really enjoyed all the animals. When we got to the Shamu pavilion it was already full so we had to sit in the “soak zone.” There was enough time for Eric to get some ponchos which were well worth the investment. Previous to the trip we had been talking to EJ about Shamu but nothing prepares you for the enormity of killer whales. They are a spectacular part of God's creation.

It was really cool to walk under the shark exhibit. Eric put EJ on his shoulders so he was even closer to the great whites. Our favorite show ended up being the sea lions. They had so much personality and the show was well produced. Wouldn’t you know that the family sitting behind us at the sea lion show was from Lincoln and they work at UNL. Such a small world!

We made it to the last daily feeding of the dolphins. I loved petting and feeding them. They have such sweet personalities. EJ didn't know what to make of the dolphins. He kept pointing at them saying "fish" which comes out like a well known four-letter word that starts with "s." We laugh every time he says it and we just hope people standing near us don't think we trained our kid to have a "potty" mouth.

Another highlight of our trip was spending time with Uncle Andy. As you can tell from all the pictures, we got some great time with him. We are thankful for all the time we got with him because he is in the middle of the basketball season right now.

We had dinner with Andy and Kelly at the famous Croce's in the Gaslamp District and then we had ice cream sundaes at the Ghiradelli store!

There was lots of lovin going on. EJ is great at giving kisses now and every once in a while he will cuddle.

We got to see Andy's team play UC Irvine. EJ got to go on the court during warm up. You can see him and Andy sizing up the competition and EJ trying to get his hands on a ball.

It was a fun trip all around and a great break before baseball season starts up. You can see the 2009 schedule at http://www.huskers.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=100&KEY=&SPID=33&SPSID=103.

Christmas

We had a very nice Christmas at our home. Santa (aka my parents!) brought EJ a big stuffed horse and he had lots of fun playing with his new toys and books. It was nice having my parents in town and spending time with them.

Here is Eric sharing a Christmas morning cinnamon roll and kiss.

EJ passing out presents to Grandpa and Grandma.

Eric's new hunting hat! You can't have too many hats and gloves in Nebraska!

Christmas Hugs with Mommy.

Not a very merry moment on Christmas. EJ didn't like the hat and didn't like waiting for the turkey to be carved and served. Poor little guy was not happy but he rebounded quickly. What a trooper and oh so cute in his red bear vest!

A picture by the Christmas tree with Grandma and Mommy. Many thanks to my mom for all the help decorating for Christmas and packing away the decorations so we could get out of town. I couldn't have done it without you!

2008: A Reflection

It’s hard to believe 2008 is coming to an end. Eric was sweet to write the Christmas letter insert while I was in New York but I wanted to reflect a little more on our year.

As you all know, EJ was the highlight of my year. Cognitively I knew that being a parent wouldn’t always be easy but I never knew how sleep deprived I would get. You never catch up. Somehow I got a kid who wakes up at 6 am no matter what. I’ve tried to adjust his schedule but he will not have it. So, I adjust…and complain about it. :-) The redeeming thing is that EJ is a lot of fun in the morning. He loves to snuggle (for a few minutes at least) and it’s great to talk with him over breakfast and put puzzles together.

His vocabulary is developing nicely and he knows many signs which provides a great way to communicate. For example, he lets me know when he is hungry, tired, or needs help. His favorite word continues to be “ball” followed by “balloon,” “Elmo” and “done.”

A definite highlight this year came when EJ started to hug and kiss. Words can’t adequately express the joy in my heart when he puts his head on my shoulder and gives me a squeeze. His kisses can be pecks or licks but I take what I can get!

This year was very full and fun-packed year for our family:

Sports: First baseball season at Nebraska, first football game, lots of making baskets in the Fisher-Price basketball hoop in the family room, swimming all summer, and learning how to run and tackle.

Travel: Lots of trips with the baseball team, trips to Colorado, first trip to the beach, lots of visits from friends and family.

Many firsts: crawling, walking, teething, eating, talking, and a first birthday.

Other fun things: daily bath time, being Nemo for Halloween, watching Uncle Andy’s team play in the NCAA tournament, playing with friends, meeting Sammi the day she was born, playing with all the grandparents and EJ’s dedication ceremony.

While we have a lot of fun memories, 2008 was a trying year for many. Our country's resolve continued to be tested through the collapse of the stock market, never ending political ads/election, the bailout, and High School Musical 3.

On the other hand, Michael Phelps made our summer exciting when he dismantled the Olympic record books, Nebraska beat Colorado in a wild football game, and Madonna is back on the market! We may be in recession but People Magazine subscriptions must be higher than ever. This crazy year made for a lot of media consumption.

Speaking of media, I calculated how many emails I sent and received for the five classes I taught this fall. The number was a staggering 1542. This number didn’t even include personal emails. After setting the calculator down, I was reminded of a Nov 2007 devotion by Renee Miller. She said, “It can simply be too much. Life, that is. Work, people, the media, the noise, the demands, the stress can squeeze out the energy and enthusiasm that should characterize the wonder all around us. We feel life has become like an old, lumpy, overstuffed chair that has long since lost its ability to provide comfort. We search about for an escape, a change, a way to turn the craziness into some semblance of order and peace.”

I can certainly relate to this so I am going to shutdown the laptop, turn off the TV (minus some Christmas-themed movies) and take a break from technology for two weeks! So, minus some Christmas pictures, this will be the last post of the year. You will find me looking for a place for EJ to sled, reading books, baking (maybe), sitting in front of the Christmas tree with hot chocolate and most of all spending time with precious friends and family. May you find some time to do things that fill your heart and make you happy this holiday season!

Thank you to all our friends and family who keep up with the blog. We wish you and your loved ones and very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Brrrrrrrr!!!!!

It's been freezing (literally) here in Nebraska. We got our first snow of the season overnight and we were excited to try our Christmas present from Michael and Carol...a snowblower! While both Eric and I tried it out, EJ stuck with the good 'ole shovel. Eric was super sweet to do our neighbors snow too. I think he was having fun but we do owe them for all the times they took care of our house last year. Being from Dallas, they knew we wouldn't have all the necessary Nebraska snow removal tools. Next thing on the agenda...finding a sled for EJ!!!!! Let the winter fun begin!
